An Economist Learns to Weld
Today the Roadside MBA crew was in Adelanto, California (slogan: The City of Unlimited Possibilities) visiting with Bill and Linda Scott at Scott Turbon Mixer. We rolled into the area late last night, with just enough time to grab a quick dinner at Paulina's Mexican Grill (excellent, btw). Walking back to our hotel, we spotted a mini-golf/go-kart/batting-cage spot, and... sadly were simply too tired to partake after our big dairy day on Wednesday. The sacrifices we make for Roadside MBA. We woke to crystal clear skies and rolled on out to the edge of town to see Bill Scott. And when … [Read more...]

The “Science” of Roadside MBA
How did we choose the Roadside MBA firms? Is our book an attempt to carefully construct a representative sample so we can scientifically assess what makes a small business successful? Well... no. We found our interview subjects in one of two ways. As described here, we often got a lot of help from local Chamber of Commerce folks. We'd call up, describe our plans, and ask to be connected with interesting, talkative, and thoughtful local business owners. Sometimes our attempts to go through the Chamber didn't work for one reason or another, so then we'd often resort to cold-calling, … [Read more...]
Jeff City: We Heart Local Chambers
It was in Jefferson City --- the Show-Me state capital --- that we learned to appreciate a good Chamber of Commerce. It was our first trip, and we didn't really know what we were doing. On a whim, I called the Jefferson City Chamber. "Hello, my name is Scott Schaefer. I'm a business professor at the University of Utah, and I'm calling with a somewhat unusual request..." In the years since, this plan --- starting each trip with calls to the local Chambers --- has become the standard operating procedure for Roadside MBA. Sometimes, this works great. Matt Parker, head of the Dothan, … [Read more...]
